The Home Ministry has decided to appointed a controversial senior police officer as the new chief of Kathmandu district. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rana Bahadur Chand will replace SSP Jaya Bahadur Chand who was recently promoted as Deputy Inspector General (DIG).
According to government officials, Home Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachchadar had proposed SSP Chand’s name for the post to Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai. SSP Chand was working at the Nepal Police Headquarters earlier. IGP Kuber Singh Rana has been reported to be disappointed with Chand’s appointment.
SSP Chand was earlier in the news after his bodyguard, a police constable physically assaulted him. According to media reports, Chand had promised his bodyguard a promotion and when it failed to materialize, the constable attacked the senior police officer. Many senior police officials are worried that Chand may help criminal gangs in the valley instead of providing security to the valley residents.
