CAAN had sought consent from all political parties in the district to shut down Phaplu airport for upgradation. CAAN has assured the local residents that upgrading of the airport will be completed within a year. CAAN will blacktop a 675-meter runaway. The project is estimated to cost Rs 60 million.

Currently, planes land on a graveled runaway. After the closure of Phaplu airport, people living in the southern belt of Solukhumbu will have to use Kangal airport, a five-hour walk from Phaplu. Nepal Airlines and Tara Airlines have been operating flights to Phaplu daily.
