Cate Blanchett emerges as early frontrunner for best actress Oscar

According to media reports, Cate Blanchett has emerged as the frontrunner for this year’s best actress Oscar for her role in the film ‘Blue Jasmine’. Blanchett has already been nominated for the best actress Oscar three times and had won the best supporting actress award in 2005 for ‘The Aviator’.

Blanchett’s performance in ‘Blue Jasmine’ has won rave reviews from critics. The Woody Allen film recalls Tennessee William’s classic play ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ and has Blanchett playing fallen New York socialite, Jasmine. The film is Allen’s 46th film as director.

Alec Baldwin and Cate Blanchett star in the film, which premiered in Cannes this year. The film follows, Jasmine who moves with her adopter sister after her wealthy husband is jailed for dodgy business practices. Jasmine is addicted to alcohol and pills and tries to maintain the appearance of wealth despite falling on hard times.
